J.D. Kimball, the former lead singer of the 1980s heavy metal band, Omen, died on Oct. 3 from cancer. His age was not released.
Omen was formed in 1983 by guitarist Kenny Powell. Kimball signed on as Omen’s lead singer, recorded four albums, then left the band in 1987. He was replaced by Coburn Pharr.
“He was a great writer, one of the true innovators in the early years of power metal. I am extremely proud of the records that we did together, ‘Battle Cry,’ ‘Warning of Danger,’ ‘Nightmares’ and ‘The Curse.’ I hope everyone will remember J.D. for all of his truly great contributions to the world of heavy metal,” Powell said.

Within his forceful traditional voice was a soft triumphant nature, an unruffled yet heroic quality that hardly anyone else possessed, and is why “Prince of Darkness”, “In the Arena”, “Teeth of the Hydra” and “Last Rites” are some of my fave tracks.

I got to know JD very well, working with him both at a boring day job and writing songs with him as a guitar player. This was when Omen was at their height. We really hit it off and dated girls who were best friends. We spent many nights working on tunes. He was a very special human being. Like someone else who posted here, I was just searching to see if I could track him down. A very sad day.

J.D. WAS MY UNCLE JOHN. ITS REALLY SAD, WE DIDN’T KNOW JUST HOW BAD HE WAS, BECAUSE MY MOTHER AND I WERE IN ARIZONA AND HE WAS LIVING WITH MY AUNT IN WASHINGTON. BUT, AS I SEE, HE LEFT QUITE A LEGACY.

I knew JD when he was in a band called Hammer Damage. I worked at a bar where they played sometimes and I hung out with him a lot. This was in 1989 when he 1st found out he had stomach cancer. I will truly miss him. I loved him very much. Erika

A MAN’S ONLY REAL STATE OF SOUL AND MIND IS HIDDEN IN THE EXPRESSIONS OF HIS BODY , THE SIGHT , THE VOICE , THE MOVEMENT.
i HAVE NEVER MET KIMBALL IN REAL LIFE. i HAVE ONLY HEARD AND SEEN HIM SINGING.
IF THERE IS AN AFTERWORLD , I WOULD DEFININTELY WISH TO HAVE THE CANCE TO MEET HIM THERE, WHEN THE TIME COMES.

    Dearest John,
I’m so sorry for the things that were said that last day. I didn’t mean them and i looked for you all those years to tell you that…until i heard the news. I never stopped loving you.

John was my hair dresser in San Diego. He told me when his cancer had returned. We were talking about writing music together when this happened. I know he moved to Seattle to his sisters to go in peace. I dont know why I was thinking about him today. I just started looking for his legacy. All I have to say is that he was a great, nice and real person who left us way to soon. God Bless

    J.D. Kimball…
I’m just a humble fan of yours, a person that discovered OMEN almost twenty years after their zenith.
Power, Epic, Tragedy… Your voice combines them in a charismatic way that will never stop to move me inside…

This is really sad news. John Kimball played in 2 bands with my older brother Joe before joining Omen. They were both fresh out of the Navy and living in San Diego working hard at growing their hair out, and practicing with a band they put together called Master. There was a bass player also fresh out of the Navy named Joe Hall in the band also. John and my Brother went on to form Hammer Damage, and Joe Hall went on to join Divine Rite. I was shocked to hear the news after putting his name in the search engine. My brother doesn’t know yet. I’m sure he’ll be devastated by this bad news. RIP John.

  12. Bill Kimball

John David was my brother. I can truly say how touched our whole family was by all the wonderful tributes him to by fans on this site. JD would have been proud to know that he had had so many devoted fans. I really wish that Kenny Powell had been able to find John again, I know that he would have jumped at the chance to re-join Omen!

John David Kimball is my uncle; I’ve never met him, but his music videos were pretty good from what I’ve seen. This is Blaine Walton, William Kimball’s son (A.K.A. John’s little brother) and I need to contact my father. If any of my relatives on here can tell me his cell phone number I’d greatly appreciate the help.

  14. Blaine Walton

I really wish that I could have met my uncle before the cancer took him. My father, Bill Kimball, and my aunt Sue always spoke highly of him. From the music that I heard my Uncle compose with Omen, I thought it was pretty damn good.~R.I.P. uncle John
P.s. If a family member is the one who wrote this blog, would you be able to tell me how to contact my father please?

Truly one of the great voices of the 80’s Metal scene…
BTW, what salon did JD work at in San Diego? I think our paths may have crossed… what a bummer if I’d met him and didn’t even realize who he was?

  19. Vinay Mulukutla

My name is Vinay Mulukutla. I am a heavy metal diehard from Great Britain. I discovered Omen when I was looking for more underground metal that I hadn’t heard and I came across Teeth of the Hydra. Its power and majesty was so strong that I was very emotional at the end of it. I knew that they were very special. I later ordered the Omen box set (Metal Blade’s 25th Anniversary Edition)and I was blown away by it. But JD’s vocals were so razor edged, his lyrics were among the greatest epic stories of valour that I had read and he looked so good. I was pretty sad, when I heard that he had passed away years before I discovered his band and ultimately him. As a fellow heavy metal disciple, I mourn our fallen brothers and take the inspiration that they left us and use it to keep progressing and doing the best I can in this life and to forever rememmber. Metal is my life and JD was one of those warriors who brought it to us. True Metal is Forever. Rest in Peace JD. My heart goes out to his family.

Hello, I would like to have some more information about John’s life, I’m a real fan of him and it’s not easy to understand something on websites because informations are really confused and there’s not even the date of his birth anywhere.. It would be great if I could get in touch with someone from his family or someone who played with him, there are a lot of old-Omen fans that would just go mad for hearing something about his other bands (Master and Hammer Damage), my e-mail elisabetta_de@hotmail.com

    Rest In Peace J.D.K.
