bfassie.jpgBrenda Fassie, South Africa’s first black pop star, died on May 9. According to the post-mortem report, Fassie’s heart stopped after using cocaine. She was 39.
Born in the Cape Town township of Langa, Fassie always loved performing. As a child, she sang and danced for her family and entertained the neighbors in talent shows. Fassie was in her teens when legendary South African producer Koloi Lebona heard her sing. He brought her back to Johannesburg and paired her with the band, The Big Dudes. In 1986, she recorded the single, “Weekend Special,” a bubble gum pop tune that quickly topped the charts. After joining forces with producer Sello “Chicco” Twala in the late 1980s, she released the album, “Too Late for Mama,” which went platinum in South Africa.
Then in 1989, Fassie’s life became tabloid fodder. She married former convict Nhlanhla Mbambo and divorced him three years later with claims of domestic abuse. She blew off concert dates, went into debt and struggled with alcohol and cocaine abuse. When Fassie found her lesbian lover, Poppie Sihlahla, dead of a drug overdose in 1995, she entered rehab and decided to turn her life around.
Fassie made her comeback in 1998 with the LP, “Memeza” (Shout), which was South Africa’s best-selling album. Her 1999 follow-up, “Nomakanjani,” sold 500,000 copies and earned Fassie her first Kora Award for best female artist. She also won the South African Music Award four years in a row.
Dubbed the “Madonna of the Townships” and South Africa’s “Queen of the Vocals,” Fassie’s husky voice and inspirational songs about love and ghetto life connected with audiences all over the continent. Her bisexuality and famous temper tantrums earned her pop diva status.
A month ago, Fassie shot video footage about her daily life for a reality TV show. “That’s How It Is – Filmed by Brenda Fassie,” aired Tuesday night on SABC2, and included a segment where she predicted her own death.

    To Bongani and Brenda’s Family
The world has lost a star. She was one in a million, we all loved her and still do. Big boy take care of yourself and know that your mom was the inspiration to all in the world. To the family be happy that she is now not in pain. She is singing her tunes happily like she used to in this world.
With lots of love from me. May the Lord be with you in this time of sorrow

Brenda, a star that went out to quickly. She will be missed by all of the African continent. I loved her music and her performance. No matter all her disappointments in life she always managed to shine again. She is one of a kind that will never be replaced. To her son, remembe that your mother always was a start and died a star. Her light will always shine when we will still continue listening to her music.

  13. Abubaker Basajjabaka

Each death has a way it pains you. Surely, for all my entire stay in South Africa since October 1998 to March 2004, if there is anything that kept me going, it was Brenda’s music. It might be a human folly to indulge in bad habits but we should look at the circumstances as a contributory factor to Brenda’s death instead of pointing fingers. Brenda’s situation was so hard to come out and anybody could easily be a victim. I grew up on Brenda’s music and contrary to remembering bad things about her I would like to remember the good things only. Brenda has not passed away but she has passed on. Abubaker Basajjabaka – Uganda

Brenda was a woman who stood out and refused to be put down inspite of the apartheid and her sex. Her Music was very nice to listen too. Her going in for the drug rehab showed her boldness to take a step in helping herself. Her works will live even after she is gone .ADIEU

Mabrrr brought me much joy when I lived in South Africa during the end of apartheid. As a naive American I stumbled onto a wealth of cultural treasure…Lady Smith Black Mambazo, Mahatlathini, Mahotella,Hugh Masakella,Miriam Makeba, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, and the incomparable Brenda Fassie. Many was the time I would find myself as the only “happy white face” in an African crowd grooving to the music.
My friends (white) agahst, as we rode around in the car, or at home, listening to these treasures that even they were unaware of. She, and many others opened my eyes, and helped me to gain a degree of understanding of a very complicated situation. It’s harder now, back in the states to find and enjoy my love of your music and music, but my appreciation grows. To Brenda….the sassiest of the lot….may God bless you, and keep you, watch over Bongani, and your family. There’s no doubt in my mind she’s the latest addition to God’s heavenly chior….despite earthly weaknesses, her soul was/is strong

May her soul rest in peace in Heaven. I am shocked in knowing today that this remarcable singer died in April. Brenda had a spirit and strength in her voice and she knew how to transmit that to us in her music. Its a tragedy to know that once again drugs had destroyed another human being…my sincerele condolocences goes to her beloved family and close friends. RIP

  97. Austin EZE-OBIA

Words are inadequate to express my feelings for my Celebrity Star Brenda Fassie who demised on last April, 2004. Oh! Brenda, the vaccuum you have created cannot be filled by anyone. It is only Jehovah God who will give us the fortitude to bear with the irreparable lost. We Africans and indeed diaspora have lost a GEM. She was the great Composer & Singer of all ages. We miss the GOLDEN VOICE of Jehovah’s creations. May Jehovah give us the grace to bear with lost. And to the immediate family, I say take heart. “William Shakespare made us to understand that DEATH is a necessary end that will come when it will come”

Hello everyone who knows of Brenda
I am an American who went to Malawi in June of 2004 to do HIV-AIDS education. I heard “My Baby” all over Malawi from Lilongwe & Balantyre to even the most remote of villages. In Johannesburg I bought every CD that Brenda put out and her voice, like the wail of a powerfull woman, still inspires and moves me to this day. She is the Queen!

I never met Brenda, I am not South African. In my years studying in London I was touched by her music and the culture behind it….I danced not ever knowing her. But her work did just that, it transcended into a positive feeling that was undeniable and so I fell in love with South Africa through her.
May mroe people find Brenda and thus South Africa.

Oh God what a wonderful treasured person you grated? But time has come that you have called her to serve following the good things she has done for the world as concerns music, really her music was so good that the time i heard her music am to be so happy,
Therefore in my own sincere dismay a say may you rest her soul in internal peace,\
What a wonderful person, the world has lost.

Just because she died it does not make her a great person. She was a lesbian, drug abuser, wild, but a great musician. It s a lesson to us all to stay away from drugs.
My condolences to Bongani. We love you and take off where your mama left and take care of yourself. The whole world is mourning with you.

Sis B, we had such wonderful times playing your music with our loved ones. Now listening to your music reminds me of all those relatives and friends that have passed. Loosing you added to the pain. Will never forget meeting you and Bongz at your house. What a wonderful, respectful and loving child you raised. Not a lot of single moms can do that. You lived your life to the fullest and you loved unconditionally. You are a reminder that life is too short. The angels got a new lead singer huh?I Can only imagine how the heavens sound.I miss you. MBM, USA.
