J.D. Kimball, the former lead singer of the 1980s heavy metal band, Omen, died on Oct. 3 from cancer. His age was not released.
Omen was formed in 1983 by guitarist Kenny Powell. Kimball signed on as Omen's lead singer, recorded four albums, then left the band in 1987. He was replaced by Coburn Pharr.
"He was a great writer, one of the true innovators in the early years of power metal. I am extremely proud of the records that we did together, 'Battle Cry,' 'Warning of Danger,' 'Nightmares' and 'The Curse.' I hope everyone will remember J.D. for all of his truly great contributions to the world of heavy metal," Powell said.
the best vocals in history of power metal. he was the one and only!!!!

I was just searching to see what JDK was doing...
Hail... And may this "death" journey be sweeter than this godforsaken reality...
Within his forceful traditional voice was a soft triumphant nature, an unruffled yet heroic quality that hardly anyone else possessed, and is why "Prince of Darkness", "In the Arena", "Teeth of the Hydra" and "Last Rites" are some of my fave tracks.
Posted by Dave Rohrbach on May 6, 2005 4:20 PMI got to know JD very well, working with him both at a boring day job and writing songs with him as a guitar player. This was when Omen was at their height. We really hit it off and dated girls who were best friends. We spent many nights working on tunes. He was a very special human being. Like someone else who posted here, I was just searching to see if I could track him down. A very sad day.
Posted by JLK on March 5, 2006 9:10 PMJ.D. WAS MY UNCLE JOHN. ITS REALLY SAD, WE DIDN'T KNOW JUST HOW BAD HE WAS, BECAUSE MY MOTHER AND I WERE IN ARIZONA AND HE WAS LIVING WITH MY AUNT IN WASHINGTON. BUT, AS I SEE, HE LEFT QUITE A LEGACY.
Posted by TAMMY on March 8, 2006 11:31 AMwow...i'm stunned!! a true metal god!!! he will be sadly missed!!! rest in peace!!!
Posted by steve on July 22, 2006 9:16 PMI knew JD when he was in a band called Hammer Damage. I worked at a bar where they played sometimes and I hung out with him a lot. This was in 1989 when he 1st found out he had stomach cancer. I will truly miss him. I loved him very much. Erika

i HAVE NEVER MET KIMBALL IN REAL LIFE. i HAVE ONLY HEARD AND SEEN HIM SINGING.
IF THERE IS AN AFTERWORLD , I WOULD DEFININTELY WISH TO HAVE THE CANCE TO MEET HIM THERE, WHEN THE TIME COMES.

I'm so sorry for the things that were said that last day. I didn't mean them and i looked for you all those years to tell you that...until i heard the news. I never stopped loving you.
Posted by Leslie on May 19, 2007 1:54 PMJohn was my hair dresser in San Diego. He told me when his cancer had returned. We were talking about writing music together when this happened. I know he moved to Seattle to his sisters to go in peace. I dont know why I was thinking about him today. I just started looking for his legacy. All I have to say is that he was a great, nice and real person who left us way to soon. God Bless

I’m just a humble fan of yours, a person that discovered OMEN almost twenty years after their zenith.
Power, Epic, Tragedy… Your voice combines them in a charismatic way that will never stop to move me inside…
March on Metal Warrior…
An amazing singer! His voice had so much power, it makes me shiver when I hear him! J.D. Kimball your fans still remember you and miss you!
Posted by Alexander on January 22, 2008 5:11 PMThis is really sad news. John Kimball played in 2 bands with my older brother Joe before joining Omen. They were both fresh out of the Navy and living in San Diego working hard at growing their hair out, and practicing with a band they put together called Master. There was a bass player also fresh out of the Navy named Joe Hall in the band also. John and my Brother went on to form Hammer Damage, and Joe Hall went on to join Divine Rite. I was shocked to hear the news after putting his name in the search engine. My brother doesn't know yet. I'm sure he'll be devastated by this bad news. RIP John.

Posted by Joe on May 7, 2008 3:21 PMJohn David was my brother. I can truly say how touched our whole family was by all the wonderful tributes him to by fans on this site. JD would have been proud to know that he had had so many devoted fans. I really wish that Kenny Powell had been able to find John again, I know that he would have jumped at the chance to re-join Omen!
Posted by Bill Kimball on July 15, 2008 3:39 AMJohn David Kimball is my uncle; I've never met him, but his music videos were pretty good from what I've seen. This is Blaine Walton, William Kimball's son (A.K.A. John's little brother) and I need to contact my father. If any of my relatives on here can tell me his cell phone number I'd greatly appreciate the help.
Posted by BlaineWalton on August 26, 2008 10:34 PMJ.D. Kimball, may you forever sing on in heaven and make the angel's cry with your amazing voice.
See you someday metal brother!
I really wish that I could have met my uncle before the cancer took him. My father, Bill Kimball, and my aunt Sue always spoke highly of him. From the music that I heard my Uncle compose with Omen, I thought it was pretty damn good.~R.I.P. uncle John
P.s. If a family member is the one who wrote this blog, would you be able to tell me how to contact my father please?
Posted by Blaine Walton on November 8, 2008 11:54 PMI just want to make homage to one of the finest power metal singers, John David Kimball and Omen brought to the world 4 titanic productions, personally I'll always remember great times when I'll hear Omen's records.
Thank you J.D.
