Skeeter Davis, a Grammy-nominated singer and veteran of the Grand Ole Opry, died on Sept. 19 after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 73.
Born Mary Frances Penick in Dry Ridge, Ky., she adopted the name Skeeter Davis in high school after a fateful meeting with Betty Jack Davis. The girls formed an act called "The Davis Sisters" and signed a recording contract with RCA Records. The duo topped the charts in 1953 with the song "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know." Their taste of fame was short-lived, however; in August of that year, Betty was killed in a car accident. Skeeter was also injured in the crash, but continued the act with Betty's sister Georgie until 1956.
Davis then moved to Nashville and hooked up with producer Chet Atkins. She came into her own as a solo artist in 1958 when her song "Lost to a Geisha Girl" reached No. 15 on Billboard's country singles chart. The next year, Davis joined the Grand Ole Opry and earned the first of five Grammy nominations she would receive during her four-decade performing career.
Although she recorded the popular pop/country songs "(I Can't Help You) I'm Falling Too" and "Gonna Get Along Without You Now," Davis' biggest crossover hit was the 1962 ballad "The End of the World." The track reached No. 2 on the country chart, No. 1 on Billboard's adult contemporary chart, No. 2 on the Hot 100 and No. 4 on the R&B list. In 1973, she was temporarily suspended from the Opry for publicly criticizing the Nashville police for arresting a group of religious zealots at a local mall.
Davis married and divorced three times, first to Kenneth Depew, then to Ralph Emery (a disk jockey and host of the TV show "Nashville Now") and finally to bassist Joey Spampinato. She penned her autobiography, "Bus Fare to Kentucky," in 1993, and co-wrote the children's book, "The Christmas Note," with Cathie Pelletier in 1997.

Sorry to hear you left, despite not hearing about for sometime,I still recall the high school girls belting your songs and my love for them hence to you.
Good bye.
Skeeter, your sweet songs will stay with me forever. You were my country music queen, and gave me many hours of country music pleasure.
I know you and Betty Jack are harmonizing in heaven. You won the battle.

Posted by I don't think anyone has ever seen a "soul" but everyone who has listened to a Skeeter davis record on October 10, 2004 7:43 AMI remember the times Skeeter would go out on the road and then she'd get into the "nose candy" like the rest of them would. Poor Ralph Emory, working all those overnight shows never knew half the stuff that she was doing. Her favorite tour was the trip she took with LSD in the early '70s. I'll miss those fun times. Take Care!
Posted by Ed Harley on October 20, 2004 10:02 AMI don't know why someone by the name of Ed Harley would find it necessary to write such lies about Skeeter, especially now that she's gone. He obviously knew less than 'poor Ralph Emery' did back then and even less now. Your memory is very clouded. It's a shame.
Posted by Maria on October 20, 2004 6:20 PMI am sending this tribute from Singapore, a small country located right on the other side of the world from the USA. Ever since I was a small boy, the music of Skeeter Davis and other great American country singers and musicians like Jim Reeves, Conway Twitty, Johnny Horton, Floyd Cramer and Chet Atkins have always been a treasured source of listening pleasure for me and many of my relatives and friends, not only in Singapore but also in Malaysia and Indonesia as well. We are greatly saddened by the demise of Skeeter but her sweet voice will always be with us through her many records, cassettes and CDs.
Goodbye, dear Skeeter and thank you for bringing so much happiness and pleasure into our lives.

"I Can't Stay Mad At You" was one of my favorite hits of the 1960's. One of the top ten. When Skeeter died a part of me died. I'll miss you for giving me the pleasure of your voice in that song.

In 1962, there was a very lonely girl of 14 who loved to sing...she had a friend, a transistor radio; it enabled her to hear you on the school bus, as she was not allowed to listen to music at home.
I will always remember you and "The End of the World"...many happy times for me.
God Bless and Tex Ritter was right.
I know your star is glittering in the heavens!
I still remember every word to End of the World, I listened to it so many times. I was just 12 or 13 when that song came out, and it made a great impression on me. Godspeed, Skeeter, I'll see you in heaven by and by.

Posted by Skeeter on January 26, 2005 10:40 PMI owned many of Skeeter's albums when I was a kid, my favorites being "Cloudy, with Occasional Tears" and "Let Me Get Close to You." After many years of not thinking about her, out of the blue, I had a sudden urge to hear her music again in late August. I was surprised how few of her intact albums (particularly my favorites) were on CD. So, I went on eBay and other sites and found good LP copies which I started listening to and enjoying in September, finding them even sweeter and more soothing than I remembered. I just happened to google for her in late Sept., wanting to see if something had been newly reissued, when I saw that she'd just died. I'm not usually into psychic phenomena, but there had to be some sort of a connection.

Posted by Graham Chapman on April 19, 2005 7:01 AMDear Friends of Skeeter Davis:
After reading the post from Ed Harley, I just wanted you all to know the real Skeeter Davis. Her commitment to Jesus Christ was always evident and I'm sorry someone would try to tarnish her memory the way he tried. To those of you who loved her, you need to know about her final days as well. Skeeter was one of the most remarkable ladies I've known and a member of the Music City Christian Fellowship since it's inception and first "Sunday Mornin' Country"® which has been going since 1980. She also sang 4 songs on the 25th Anniversary concert on June 13, 2005 for CMA Music Fest/Fan Fair--her last public performance before her passing. Though weak and barley able to get around, I helped her to the stage where she gave her testimony, her love, and her all to the fans she loved so. It was so important to her to reach out with God's message of love and saving grace, that she came to the concert, though at deaths reach. The Holy Spirit was evident as she sang 4 songs, after everyone thinking she would just talk. As she came off the stage after her second standing ovation, she told my mother, "Love is the best medicine." The love she shared with her fans will live forever! To Ed Harley, I'm sorry that you have been left with the wrong impression of Skeeter. It is my prayer for you that, if you have not done so, you would accept Jesus into your heart and know God's love and forgiveness in your life! I've included her story below. I will be having a memorial Tribute to Skeeter at this years 26th Annual “Sunday Mornin’ Country”® Celebration! CMA Music Fest/Fan Fair / Sunday, June 12, 2005 / 2:30 P.M. / The Historic Ryman Auditorium HOSTED BY: LEGENDARY MS. BRENDA LEE www.Ryman.com. God Bless, Lorrie See her picture at Latest News Feb. www.MusicCityChristianFellowship.com
A MOMENT TO REMEMBER
On Sunday, June 13, 2004, a most memorable event occurred at the presentation of the 25th Anniversary "SUNDAY MORNIN' COUNTRY" during CMA Music Fest 2004. It was at the Ryman Auditorium and many well-known country stars had sung and given their testimonies at this concert/service sponsored by the Music City Christian Fellowship. The "Moment to Remember" however, was the appearance of Skeeter Davis towards the end of the show. Skeeter, as we all knew had been ill for many years and she appeared on this event though weak and ill form the ravages of cancer.
As she gave her testimony and started to sing we all realized this might be her last public appearance. However she seemed to gain strength from the love of the crowd, the band, and the fifty-voice choir and finished "The Old Rugged Cross" and "The King is Coming" to a standing ovation. We requested she do another song and there wasn't a dry eye in the crowd as she sang in that haunting, little girl voice, "Jesus Loves Me". She also stayed for the cast closer of "I'll Fly Away".
Skeeter passed away two months later and we will always remember that moment in history when Skeeter sang for the last time on this earth those songs, "The Old Rugged Cross", "The King is Coming", "Jesus Loves Me", and "I'll Fly Away". As we left the old Ryman Auditorium we knew we had witnessed a "Moment To Remember" at , "SUNDAY MORNIN' COUNTRY" CMA Music Fest 2004. Submitted by Joe Babcock

Posted by Ron Walton on July 9, 2005 3:18 AMSomehow I managed to miss any announcements last year about Skeeter Davis' death. Needless to say, I am deeply saddened to hear of her passing. My first thought about hearing this sad news was, "Wow! Where do we go from here?" As we know, Skeeter was a great and very talented artist and singer, crossing over into several areas of popular music. I personally believe she never got all the recognition and credit she really deserved. Since the early 1960s I have faithfully collected her 45s and albums, and now her CDs. Her relationship with the family of Buddy Holly is an interesting story in itself. No, it is certainly not "The End Of The World." Like thousands of other fans, I will continue cherish the music legacy she left us. Thanks for reading this.

It's so sad to know so late that my favorite country singer died since last year and I just got to know. That was just about a month after I printed her profile to prove to someone that she was still alive.
Her songs were real-life that I knew that they were all not experiences of her own. If so, she would have died a long time ago.
May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in Perfect Peace. I love you Grand Mom. Rest in Peace till we meet one day.

A precious childhood memory I have of my dad is our father-daughter outings to "the City" music store every 6 months or so, where he would always buy me one album, and Skeeter Davis was the first place I would look in the racks. Skeeter's music had not been part of my musical world for the past forty years but rediscovering it was a real pleasure. Then, when I searched for more information about Skeeter, I learned that she had passed away last year. What a shame that so little of her recorded output is available on CD. (It appears RCA carries most of the blame for that.) Well, I'm on a mission now to track down Skeeter Davis LPs and remaster them to CD for my own pleasure and that of my friend.

Posted by Daniel Anderson on March 26, 2006 10:34 AMDear Skeeter:
You had a terrific voice. You are greatly missed. I still enjoy listening to all of you songs. They helped me through rather difficult times- I will never forget you.
I have been a fan of Skeeters popular songs for a long time but only recently have started to get into the music. I wasnt aware that she wasnt with us anymore until recently and I am still in shock. Her music is timeless and will be with us forever. The world is missing something special. Bye Skeeter
Posted by Brent on April 1, 2006 12:38 PMA great voice from the south, Skeeter is not as popular as Barbara Streisand but who cares? She was very original and worked hard to entertain us. Too bad she is gone.
Posted by Geoff Brandner on April 3, 2006 7:04 PMI have only heard one of your songs, Skeeter, but I love it: 'The End of the World.' It's one of my favorite songs ever, it's so sad but beautiful, you have a wonderful voice and I will be seeking more of your songs to listen to. Thank you. Rest in Peace. C.

Posted by kwame ibwe on July 27, 2006 12:20 PMIn THE FALL OF 1973 SKEETER DAVIS CAME TO SALEM MISSOURI TO PERFORM FOR THE DENT COUNTY FAIR. IT RAINED AND SHE WAS RELOCATED TO THE SALEM CITY HALL AUDITORIUM.
AFTER THE CONCERT SKEETER STOOD OUT IN THE LIGHT RAIN AND TALKED TO DANNY AND DAVID HOLLINGSHEAD AND ME. DANNY AND I WERE 15 AND DAVID WAS 16 AT THE TIME
SKEETER WAS A CHRISTIAN AND TOLD US THAT SHE WOULD NOT PERFORM AT A BAR BECAUSE JESUS WOULD NOT WANT TO THERE.
DANNY AND DAVID ARE BOTH BECAME ORDAINED CHRISTIAN PREACHERS. ALTHOUGH THEY ARE NOT PASTORING NOW DAVID IS DR.DAVID HOLLINGSHEAD WHO LIVES IN MISSOURI'S BOOTHEAL HE IS AN EDUCATOR. DANNY RUNS TAMCO ROOFING MANUFACTURING IN JOPLIN MO. I WORK IN TRANSPORTATION.
SKEETER WAS KNOWN AS ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF COUNTRY ROCK. HER AND CAROL KING DID ALLOT FOR 60'S MUSIC. TODAY I HEARD HER THE END OF THE WORLD ON 103.3 KLOU IN ST.LOUIS AND DECIDED TO SEE IF SHE HAD A WEB SITE.
GOD HAVE MERCY I DID NOT KNOW THAT SKEETER PASSED AWAY IN 2004. WE KNOW SHE IS WITH JESUS.
I USED TO HEAR HER HITS ON 1490 KTTR ROLLA MISSOURI. NOW THE STATION OWNS SEVERAL OTHERS AND IS KNOWN AS RESULTS RADIO.
I HAVE AN ALBUM AUTOGRAPHED BY SKEETER DAVIS
THE I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S ALL OVER 1973 RECORDING ON THE MODERN DYNAFLEX RECORD. THIS WAS THE LATEST MOST DURABLE RECORDING AVAILABLE AT THAT TIME. IT WOULD NOT BREAK IF YOU BENT IT OR DROPPED IT.
GOD BLESS YOU SKEETER I AM SURE YOU ARE LOOKING DOWN HERE ON US WITH A BIG SMILE.

Posted by David (Mr. T.) on October 18, 2006 8:36 PMHi,
My name is Larry Bennett and I'm 54 yrs. young, just learned about Ms Skeeters passing and I waited to long, on my 12th birthday she came to our school and performed , in between songs she asked if it was anyones birthday tonight so I jumped up. She had me come up on stage and she sang to me End of The World. Really made a lasting impression on a young kid , always thought how nice and thoughtful she was. Anyway the school was Channelview High in Texas .
I'm so sorry to hear of skeeters demise...i'm 44 years old but my mom had her records...my moms in heaven with skeer now...its february 18,2006...and i just found out of skeeter's passing...she was a great country singer...i'm listening to skeeter as i type...." we used to go to ponderosa park in salem, ohio, its where the country singers played at. and sheeter came there a few times in the late 60's..may your soul rest with god.....take care skeeter will see ya soon
god bless ya

Oh dear,I wonder why I thought she was still living till I opened this website only to learn of her death long ago.Sorry and sorry and sorry, Skeeter Davis's singing voice, meaningful words tailored to entice the love mind in its deep hidden place, with a touch of imotion and all is the only lady whose music I cant do without listening to since I was 10 in 1964 up to my 53 years of age now. "Last Date with you" etc really touch mind mind. No age limit affiliated to the words. Well may her soul rest in iternal peace, and if there was a way of bringing her back well......

I was a fan of Skeeter's back in the 60's and was re-introduced to her after coming across her "Pop Hits Collection". What a unique voice she has. Sincere and honest in all the "country-politan" songs she recorded, she is also one of the best "girl groups" of the 60's! What a shame that RCA has neglected to release her albums on CD.
Posted by Don B. on April 29, 2007 10:54 PMI can remember exactly where I was when I first heard Skeeter sing "The End of The World". I was 14 years old and walking barefoot along a dusty road in southern Oregon. That song meant so much to me and it still does. In fact, I told my husband I want it played at my memorial service because it is so much a part of who I am. It's difficult to explain but suffice it to say, I could listen to that song over and over again and never tire of it. For me, it's cathartic to sing along and just let it all out. Skeeter was my heroine. I always hoped I could meet her in person and it was when I was searching the Web for one of her concerts that I learned of her passing. I did email her once but I never heard back. Now I know why---she was sick. I know in my heart, though, that she would have responded if she'd been able. I am in the process of collecting all her songs. I would love to get her gospel recordings. Does anyone know if she had a gospel album, and, if so, its title?
Posted by Margie Miller on May 10, 2007 2:40 AMSkeeter, your songs are fantastic, your duets with bobby bare are among my all time favourite records, i was trying to all macho while typeing this...but a little biddy tear let me down, you are greatly missed.

Posted by Dean Lawson on August 21, 2007 12:51 AMAs a boy of 10 I loved the music of Skeeter. That is not exceptional. I wonder what all the persones with the same Skeeter story have in common?
When I read in 2004 that Skeeter died, I made a promise to myself to visit her grave and to see where she has lived. This year I went to Franklin, Brentwood, Glencoe and Dry Ridge from the Netherlands. I was fortunate to met her brother Buddy. Skeeter thank you.
Johnny Cash brought over 3 backup girls when he was in England in about '62, he was showing them the world 'out there' as he thought all 3 were going to be big stars and he wanted them to know the USA wasn't the entire world. One girl I can't recall, but one was Dolly Parton, she was so young she had her 16th birthday AFTER the show! "You're 16, ok?" growled Johnny. She was theoretically underage! The last girl was Skeeter Davis. She was much older than the others, maybe 30? But she didn't look a day over 20. Beautiful girl. All 3 girls came down to my home after the show, to relax for a day and see some of ordinary people and life. They went to the pub for a drink...all but Skeeter. She didn't like anything to do with drink, period, having been used and abused by far too many drunken guys, including her husband. So I stayed to keep her company, sunning ourselves in our garden. She then helped me with my chores, peeling potatoes etc. We got on great, she was a very nice girl to be with. We joked about dating if she came over again. I like to think she ment it. I was 16, ok? Big hunky guy for my age though, looked all of 17! I've always recalled Skeeter with great affection. She never did come over again though....

I just wished I'd met her in person whilst she was alive to tell her. As it is I never will but she will remain in my thoughts. God bless you Skeeter - you were one of a kind.
Posted by Brent on September 6, 2007 11:47 AMThis Sep 19th marks the 3rd anniversary of Skeeter's death. I am glad to see that her loyal
fans are keeping up with their tributes to a great singer and person. The end of the world will never come to her as the great songs we enjoyed from her will live forever in our hearts.
See you someday in Heaven Skeeter.
It was well over a year before my wife and I learnt of Skeeter's passing.
We met her in June 1982 when we were introduced to her at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, by our friend, the late Grant Turner, the Dean of Grand Ole Opry announcers.
Skeeter called our hotel to find out how we were doing and promised to have us over at her house, but our thrill was short-lived as one of her friends discouraged her, telling Skeeter that she did not know the people, so how could she have them at her house.
Nevertheless, on the second Saturday night visit to the Opry, Skeeter met us in our seats and took us backstage where we spent the night viewing the show from that vantage point. Grant Turner had done the same the previous Saturday and also three years before, in 1979, during our first visit.
Skeeter was a gracious hostess and we shall cherish the pictures we have with her which we took backstage at the show.
Sometime in the 1990s when she was in neighbouring Barbados for a show, I called her and had a chat with her.
I grew upon a diet of Skeeter Davis' songs and played many of them during my time as an announcer on radio in Trinidad.
May she rest in peace.

It hurts my heart to hear that my favorite singer had passed away. It puts a hole in my heart to know that she is no more. One of her musics i love most is "I don't want to play house".
Sleep on skeeter, sleep on.
This is someone who i have cherished for her many contributions in my life through her meaningful songs. Whenever i was down with life situations, her musics were always there to comfort me.
I missed you ma skeeter and rest in perfect peace.
I came to find out about Skeeter when i was searching for a song a few weeks ago. I ended up with a song of Skeeter. Boy, did she surprise me!
A great song (Now I Lay Me Down To Weep) sang by a beautiful voice. Immediately i searched for more info about her, her songs, cds, well everything really. The sad part of all this searching was finding out she died a few years ago already. Still, im happy that i discovered her and ordered a CD of her right away.
Skeeter, you have given me a special feeling. Thats thanks to your songs but also thanks to you. Not that i ever seen you (i'm only 25 and never knew about her before) but i just KNOW that you're a special lady. Thanks and thanks for all great music, rest in peace...

Posted by Alfred Gunaseelan on June 8, 2008 10:39 AMI would never forget the wonderful experience that I had when Skeeter was in Singapore for her concert many years back. I was in my 20s back then and I enjoyed every minute of her show. I only realized that she had passed away 4 years ago while surfing the web for her song. Thanks for your great music which had accompanied me throughout my childhood days and until now. May God be with you and rest in peace... :)
Skeeter was one of a kind. A sweet, loving, christian woman. It's sad that people try to tarnish a persons reputation when they die. I met Skeeter a few times and she always made time to talk. The last time she was visibly ill (1998), but talked to me over a half an hour. Posed for photos and signed some things for me. I kept asking if I was putting her out but she said it did her good to be around people and keep busy. I can care less what people say about Skeeter here in a negative manner. I know god freed Skeeter from her sickness and now she's whole again. Peace be with you. I love you and miss you, Randy.

Posted by Dick on September 16, 2008 10:08 AMGone for almost 4 years ... I have asked myself at least 20 times already why i never found out about her earlier than April this year.
Sure, i have her autobiography and many of the CDs available (i really hope someone will release more) but the chance of meeting her alive and well would mean a lot to me. Even though i live in The Netherlands, i would have made the trip to Nashville for that. Sadly that can't be anymore so i'll keep the memory of her alive with what i have and cherish it. Rest in peace and God's glory Skeeter, i'll remain a (late) fan forever.
I was a student of the first grade in 1963 when the first time I heard "The End of the world". The sound of this song accrossed softly thru my class room. This song and "Last Date" are still my most favourite songs up to now and I always play and play it again in my car and or on my lap top. Very memorable moments. Rest in Peace with Jesus Christ Skeeter Davis.
